School’s Out, Estate Planning is In

| Megan Stamm

If summer vacation has you hyped, you’re not alone. After two straight years of travel restrictions, it is (finally) your time to shine. But if your packing list reads something like: Swimsuit? Check. Sunscreen? Check. Estate plan...? Well, it’s probably time to pay your estate planning attorney a quick visit so you can truly indulge in that poolside mojito.

Why do we recommend taking care of your estate plan before jet-setting? In a nutshell, planning while you can and before you need to, is meaningful. We sincerely hope your vacation goes off without a hitch, but anyone who has ever rented a car without adding insurance knows how the story ends. (Not well!) If you plan for anything and everything and put your wishes to paper before your trip, you can feel at ease knowing that should you become ill or in the event of an accident while away, you have a plan in place for your loved ones to follow.

So, what should your estate plan entail? Let’s start with the basics. A solid estate plan includes (but is not limited to) a will and/or a trust, a power of attorney, and an advance directive. These few but critical legal tools will cover you from naming a guardian for your minor children to handling your assets and medical decisions.

We don’t want to cramp your style, but estate planning and summer vacation planning go hand-in-hand. By hiring an attorney who specializes in trusts and estates, you will be signing your documents in no time and ready for sun, sand, and peace of mind.
